Finnish view in glass art

28.06.2017

Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen is one of the most respected and well-known glass artists and designers of Finland. Her art combines pure Scandinavian design with the richness of colours and materials. Pohjalainen has made a long and successful career in fashion and jewellery design. In recent years, she has focused especially in glass art.

Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen gets her inspiration from the landscapes of her childhood, from the coastline of Raahe, a city in Northern Finland. Her art has been influenced by the nature, the four seasons and the history of Finland. One artwork depicts the fall, the second brings out the light of the spring, the third is a description of the sea, whereas the fourth tells a story of a Finnish woman.

The biggest project for Pohjalainen in 2017, the 100th anniversary of Finland's independence, is an exhibition of 50 glass sculptures in Shanghai, China, in 12.-27.10.2017. The exhibition is held in Shanghai World Financial Center, which is the economic center and the landmark of Shanghai. The exhibition is located in Yun Jian Art Museum in the building’s 29th floor. Pohjalainen leaves to China with a brave mind.

”Taking my glass art to China is a great effort. I believe that taking Finnish glass art to the economic center of Shanghai is worth it. The exhibition is held in the city of Pudong where there are about 8 million inhabitants. There are about 20 million inhabitants in the area of Shanghai”, Pohjalainen says.

International business is co-operation

The exhibition in Shanghai is a prelude for the internationalization plans for Pohjalainen.  To achieve her goals, she is looking for partners from different fields. Pohjalainen has always aimed at combining business and art. She believes that they have much to give to each other.

Pohjalainen has been awarded multiple times for her art and design. She has received for example the most famous design award in Finland, the Kaj Frack-award, and the honorary doctorate in the University of Eastern Finland. She has graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in clothing and textile design. Her first jewellery collection came out in 2004. The collection represents modern, clear and timeless design.

Pohjalainen studied glass and ceramics design in her adulthood. Glass design was her childhood dream. Now the dream has come true and she has worked with her glass art for the past 10 years. She works together with the world’s top glass blowers in Murano in Italy and in Nuutajärvi in Finland.
