Glass put me under its spell ten years ago. Ever since I was a child, I had been fascinated by its transparent beauty and been impressed by the forms it can take when it is in the hands of an expert. But first I needed a long career as a fashion and textile designer and a jewellery designer before I was ready to start working with this enchanting and challenging material. I started from the beginning. I studied, practised, failed and made progress. Now glass has become a part of the way that I see the universe and depict it.

Ritva-Liisa and the team of Murano

In Murano, Italy, I work with maestro Pino Signoretto with the glass sculptures for my exhibition in Shanghai. Maestros Mariano Moro and Christiano Toro from Ars Murano glass workshop blow the big multi-colour layered sculptures. Amber Hauch, an American glass blower, who has worked with glass in Murano more than 20 years, is an important contact.

Glass work Together

A sculpture made to order: A sculpture for the new building for Kuopio Energy. Unique glass sculpture by Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen. Nuutajärvi, Finland, 2017.

In co-operation with glass blowers Alma Jantunen, Johannes Rantasalo, Matti Vilppula. Polishing: Heikki Viinikainen. A glass sculpture in 40 parts made in Nuutajärvi, Finland in co-operation with glass blowers Alma Jantunen, Johannes Rantasalo and Matti Vilppula. Finishing process done by Heikki Viinikainen.

The shapes are processed with three glass blowers. This technique has been developed over many years by the same team. The work is made by hand using different glass techniques, part by part, from bottom to top. In the end, different parts are combined and the sides are ground and polished to fit each other according to Ritva-Liisa’s drawings.
